Attachments are listed in the header area at the top of the message. Attachments are marked with the paper clip icon.

  1. Open the attachment.
  2. In the application that opens the attachment, save a copy of the attachment to your computer.


Displaying full headers

When you open message, the header section at the top of the message displays the message subject, From, To, Date, and Attachments (if there are any). It is possible to show full headers, which is a complete list of all routing from the message source to your Inbox, along with other details. Full headers can be useful in troubleshooting.

Replying

  1. On the menu bar, click Reply or Reply All.
    • Reply. Sends a reply to the address or addresses in the To field.
      or
    • Reply All. Sends a reply to the addresses in the To, Cc, Bcc, and Fcc fields.

  2. Proceed as for sending mail.

You can control the message format and other features of your replies. The Reply settings allow you to select:

Forwarding

  1. On the menu bar, click Forward.
  2. Proceed as for sending mail.

You can control whether to forward messages as inline text or as attachments. For more information, see Settings.

Adding contacts

When you are reading a message, you can add the sender to your contacts.

To add a contact

  1. To the right of the From field, click Add.
  2. Enter the contact information:
    • Nickname. A short name that you can use for quick addressing. If you type the nickname instead of the full display name or email address, Alpine will offer a list of matching choices from your contacts list and the University of Washington directory. You can select the contact from the list.
    • Display Name. The name that appears in the message header.
    • Email. The contact's email address.
    • Notes. Any text you want.
    • Fcc folder. A folder that will receive copies of all messages that you send to this contact.

  3. Click Add.


Saving messages to a folder

You can move or copy messages to folders. Moving a message removes it from the Inbox while creating a copy in the designated folder. Copying a message leaves the message in the Inbox while creating a copy in the designated folder.

  1. On the menu bar, locate the Move or Copy button. Skip this step if the one you want is already displayed. If necessary, click the button and pull down the menu to select Move or Copy.
  2. On the menu bar, click to Folder and select the target folder from the list, or select More Folders to see a list of all folders. If you select More Folders, click the target folder in the list, and then click Copy or Move.
